Ottawa-based defence engineering firm launches a family of Edge-AI powered deployable sensing solutions designed to deliver persistent awareness across land, water, and ice.
OTTAWA, ON — Convergence Design Services, an Ottawa-based defence technology engineering firm with over thirty years of mission-critical engineering experience, has launched Arctic OWL (patent pending), a Canadian Edge-AI situational awareness platform designed to provide persistent monitoring and threat awareness in remote, infrastructure-limited, and operationally challenging environments like the Canadian Arctic.
Following its public debut at CANSEC 2026, Arctic OWL is now available for demonstration, evaluation, and procurement discussions with defence and security organizations in Canada and allied nations.

PLATFORM OVERVIEW
Arctic OWL is designed to give operators a comprehensive picture of activity across large areas of interest, helping identify, classify, and monitor activity in challenging operational environments. Edge-AI processing filters and prioritizes incoming data before it reaches the operator, delivering meaningful, actionable intelligence rather than raw sensor output, reducing cognitive load and supporting faster, more informed decision-making in the field.
The platform supports long-duration, multiyear deployment in locations where power, communications, and infrastructure may be limited or unavailable. Its distributed architecture enables flexible deployment across a wide range of missions, terrains, and climates, while intelligent onboard processing helps deliver timely information to operators when and where it is needed most.
Designed for scalability and adaptability, Arctic OWL can be deployed as a standalone capability or integrated into larger operational systems and programs.
THE OWL ECOSYSTEM
Arctic OWL is the flagship of the OWL ecosystem, a suite of deployable edge-AI sensing solutions built to operate independently or as a meshed network to provide continuous, integrated situational awareness across land, maritime, and subsurface environments. Each platform shares the same core design principles: no fixed infrastructure required, long-duration off-grid operation, and Edge-AI processing that delivers actionable awareness wherever it is needed.

Arctic OWL: A land-based situational awareness platform designed to provide persistent monitoring and threat detection in remote operating environments.
Ice OWL: A deployable Edge-AI sensing platform designed specifically for operations on ice and seasonal northern terrain, extending awareness into some of the world's most challenging environments.
OWL Buoy: A deployable maritime sensing platform designed for waterways, coastal regions, ports, and remote marine environments. OWL Buoy extends monitoring capabilities into areas where traditional infrastructure is unavailable or impractical.
OWL Alert: A lightweight personal wearable providing immediate threat notifications to personnel in the field.
LAYERED DETECTION AND AWARENESS
Arctic OWL combines advanced acoustic sensing with intelligent optical monitoring to provide layered detection, verification, and tracking capabilities.
By integrating multiple sensing modalities into a unified platform, Arctic OWL helps operators develop a clearer understanding of activity within their area of interest while reducing unnecessary workload and false alarms.
The platform is designed to support awareness across air, land, maritime, and subsurface environments, providing a comprehensive operational picture from a distributed network of sensing assets.
PERSONNEL PROTECTION
OWL Alert is a lightweight personal wearable that provides immediate threat notifications directly to personnel operating in the field, alerting them to drone activity within their immediate vicinity. In operational environments where hearing may be reduced by helmets, ear coverings, or hearing protection, personnel can miss critical auditory cues from nearby threats. OWL Alert addresses this gap by providing configurable audible alerts, ensuring personnel remain aware of drone activity in their vicinity regardless of operational conditions.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR CANADIAN DEFENCE AND SECURITY
Canada faces unique security challenges across its Arctic territory, coastlines, critical infrastructure, and remote regions. Monitoring these areas using traditional infrastructure-dependent systems can be operationally complex and costly.
Arctic OWL was developed to help address these challenges through a flexible, deployable, and sovereign Canadian capability built for the most operationally demanding environments on earth.
As Canada continues to strengthen domestic defence capability, Arctic sovereignty, and supply chain resilience, Arctic OWL provides a Canadian-developed solution built on domestic expertise and supply chains.
The platform is also designed for dual-use applications, supporting missions such as:
Arctic and maritime domain awareness
Border and perimeter security
Critical infrastructure monitoring
Environmental observation
Emergency management and public safety operations
PROCUREMENT AND PROGRAM ENGAGEMENT
Arctic OWL is available for demonstration, evaluation, and procurement discussions.
Convergence Design Services is actively engaging with the Canadian Armed Forces, Department of National Defence, Canadian Coast Guard, public safety organizations, and allied nations regarding future deployment opportunities and program integration.
